Make flashcards that actually help students remember

  • One idea per card. "Mammal: warm-blooded, feeds young milk" beats a paragraph. If a definition runs past two lines, split it.
  • Say the answer before flipping. Looking at the back and thinking "yes, I knew that" is recognition. Saying it out loud first is recall, which is what builds memory (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006).
  • Space it out. Three short sessions across a week beat one long session the night before. The Leitner box below handles the scheduling for you.
  • Shuffle. Cards learned in a fixed order get remembered by position. Study mode shuffles every round.

Printing tips

Print on card stock (160–200 gsm) if your printer allows it. For the double-sided layout, print page 1, put the stack back in the tray and print page 2 on the back, flipping on the long edge. The back page is already mirrored so each definition lands behind its term.

Why the Leitner box saves study time

Box 1 is reviewed every session, box 2 every second session, box 3 every fourth. Right answers climb; a miss sends the card back to box 1. Run a few sessions and watch the effort go where it is needed.

Questions teachers ask

How do I print double-sided flashcards?

Choose "Fold in half" and each card prints with the term on the left and the definition on the right; cut along the solid lines and fold on the dashed line. For true double-sided printing, choose "Front and back pages": the backs are mirrored so they line up when you print on both sides (flip on the long edge).

How many flashcards fit on a page?

Eight cards per A4 or US Letter page in the cut-and-fold layout, or ten per page on the front/back layout. Long definitions get a smaller font automatically.

What is the Leitner system?

A flashcard method by Sebastian Leitner (1972). Cards start in box 1. A card you get right moves up a box; a card you miss goes back to box 1. You review box 1 every session and higher boxes less often, so study time goes to the cards you do not know yet.

Can I import from a spreadsheet?

Yes. Copy two columns (term and definition) from Excel or Google Sheets and paste them into the box; the tab between columns is recognised.

Are my cards saved?

Your card list and your Leitner boxes are stored in this browser only (localStorage). Clear them on the privacy page.
