Ways to use bingo in class

  • Definition bingo. Put vocabulary words on the cards but call out the definitions. Students have to recall the word, not just hear it.
  • Maths facts. Use number mode with a 4×4 card and call "7 × 8" instead of "56".
  • Sight words (K–1). 3×3 cards with big squares, one card per page, and 12–15 words.
  • Language classes. Put the target-language words on cards and call them in English, or the reverse.
  • Get-to-know-you bingo. Squares like "has a pet" or "was born in another state"; students find a classmate for each square.

How to make custom bingo cards

  1. Choose My words and paste at least as many words as there are squares; more words means fewer ties.
  2. Set the number of cards to your class size, plus a couple of spares.
  3. Print. The caller sheet comes last, already shuffled.

How long will a bingo game last?

More cards in play means someone gets a line sooner. This runs 300 simulated games of classic 75-ball bingo (5×5 cards, free centre, any row, column or diagonal wins) for your class size.

Questions teachers ask

How many words do I need for word bingo?

At least 24 for a 5×5 card with a free space, but 30–40 is better: with only 24 words every card has the same words, just shuffled, and everyone tends to win at once. For 3×3 cards, 12–15 words is plenty.

Are the bingo cards all different?

Yes. Every card is shuffled separately, and the generator checks that no two cards in a set are identical. With 24 words on a 5×5 card, cards differ in layout; with more words they also differ in which words appear.

What is a call sheet?

A list of every word or number in random order for the caller. Tick them off as you call so you can check a winning card. It prints after the cards.

How many cards fit on a page?

Choose 1, 2 or 4 cards per printed page. One per page gives big squares for young children; four per page saves paper for number bingo.

What numbers go on a 75-ball bingo card?

In US-style 75-ball bingo, the B column holds 1–15, I 16–30, N 31–45, G 46–60 and O 61–75, with a free space in the centre. The number mode here follows that layout.
