Anagram activities for students
- Word-making race. Put a long word on the board (THANKSGIVING, CHAMPIONSHIP) and give pairs five minutes. Score one point per letter in each valid word.
- Anagram pairs. Give half the class a word and the other half its anagram (HEART / EARTH) and have them find their partner.

Anagram-solving is really pattern-matching: good solvers try common chunks (-ER, -ING, TH, CH) instead of random orders. That is why sorting the letters alphabetically is how computers do it: two words are anagrams exactly when their sorted letters match (EARTH and HEART both sort to AEHRT).

What is an anagram?
A word or phrase made by rearranging all the letters of another: LISTEN and SILENT, or EARTH and HEART. This tool also lists shorter words that use some of the letters, which is handy for word games and spelling challenges.
Which dictionary does the anagram generator use?
About 38,000 common English words (American and British spellings) from SCOWL, the Spell Checker Oriented Word Lists by Kevin Atkinson, limited to its most common size levels so results are words students actually know. Rude words are filtered out for classroom use.
Can I use a blank or wildcard?
Yes. Type ? for a blank tile that can be any letter, as in Scrabble. For example "tr?e" finds TREE, TRUE and TIRE.
How can I use anagrams in class?
Give students a long word such as TEMPERATURE and ask how many words they can make in five minutes, then reveal the full list here. It is a quick spelling warm-up that rewards knowing letter patterns.
